It certainly feels like autumn is well and truly over with a good snow cover on the local mountains this week which can only mean one thing… Winter is pretty much here! The roads are all open with the gritter lorries out as we speak.
We are now in the middle of quite a spell of cold weather, and for the time of year, winter walking & climbing conditions are becoming excellent. There is a fair amount of unconsolidated snow lying on top of scree on most of the walk-ins and approaches to climbs – which can be hard work. However, the snow is now beginning to compact in places, & things are looking pretty good with a thaw pending over the weekend and colder weather returning after the weekend. This should settle things down nicely.
With mountains being pretty quiet and the cold weather set to come in again next week this is a great time to be out on the hills – whether this is just “padding around” at low level, getting in the first route of the 2018 winter season, or to kick start your winter walking & climbing season. Now would be good time to refresh or upgrade your winter mountain skills or winter mountain navigation with a day or two out on the hills with one of our local guides
Or just do your own thing independently from our comfortable bunkhouse or self-catering apartments (warm & well heated with drying rooms just in case!!).
